Michael Lorenzen
Michael Lorenzen Continues to provide length in loss
Wed, May 14, 2025, 10:47 PM
Lorenzen (3-4) took the loss Wednesday against the Astros after allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk in 7.1 innings. He struck out five.
Analysis: Although Wednesday marked Lorenzen's longest outing of the season, he gave up greater than three runs for just the third time in nine starts. While the veteran right-hander matched a season worst with seven hits allowed, he's now tossed at least six frames in four of his past five appearances. Lorenzen will look to continue providing length for the Royals in his next scheduled start against the Giants next week, when he'll carry a steady 3.76 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 45:15 K:BB over 52.2 innings in 2025.
Maikel Garcia
Maikel Garcia Gets back on track with homer
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:57 PM
Garcia went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and an additional RBI in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to Houston.
Analysis: It was the 14th multi-hit effort of the season by Garcia, who tallied multiple extra-base hits Wednesday for just the second time this year. The utility man had gone just 1-for-20 in his last five outings, so it was a strong bounce-back performance as well. Garcia is still trending up overall, as he's batting .323 with three homers, five doubles, nine RBI and seven stolen bases over his last 65 at-bats.
Kyle Isbel
Kyle Isbel Taking seat versus southpaw
Wed, May 14, 2025, 5:05 PM
Isbel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros.
Analysis: The lefty-hitting Isbel started in Tuesday's 2-1 loss against Astros southpaw Framber Valdez, but the outfielder will hit the bench Wednesday while Houston sends a second straight lefty (Colton Gordon) to the bump. Mark Canha will enter the lineup as a replacement for Isbel, manning left field and batting sixth.
John Schreiber
John Schreiber Serves up walk-off homer Tuesday
Tue, May 13, 2025, 10:35 PM
Schreiber (1-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Astros after giving up a walk-off home run before recording an out in the ninth inning.
Analysis: It wasn't a blown save due to the game being tied at 1-1 before he served up the homer to Isaac Paredes, but Schreiber still allowed his first run since April 16. The 31-year-old right-hander has worked in a setup role along with Lucas Erceg ahead of closer Carlos Estevez this year, which has prevented Schreiber from seeing a single save opportunity so far in 2025. Through his first 17 innings, Schreiber sports a 2.12 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB.
Kris Bubic
Kris Bubic Dominates Astros with nine Ks
Tue, May 13, 2025, 9:29 PM
Bubic didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Astros after allowing one run on six hits and one walk in 6.1 innings. He struck out nine.
Analysis: Bubic established a season high and tied a career best in punchouts, generating a staggering 22 swinging strikes. Not only was it the sixth quality start of the year for the left-hander, but Tuesday also marked the fifth time in nine starts that he worked at least six frames while giving up one run or fewer. Bubic will take a superb 1.66 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 56:15 K:BB across 54.1 innings into his next scheduled appearance against the Giants, who own a weak .638 OPS versus left-handed pitching over their first 42 games.
Drew Waters
Drew Waters Out of Royals' lineup
Tue, May 13, 2025, 3:15 PM
Water is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game in Houston.
Analysis: It's a routine day off for Waters, who has been a regular over the past month while bouncing around to all three outfield spots. The Royals are going with Mark Canha, Kyle Isbel and Hunter Renfroe in the outfield Tuesday.
Rich Hill
Rich Hill Signs minors pact with Royals
Tue, May 13, 2025, 1:43 PM
Hill signed a minor-league contract with the Royals on Tuesday.
Analysis: The 45-year-old lefty will report to the Royals' spring training complex before eventually joining Triple-A Omaha. Hill logged 3.2 innings across four relief appearances with Boston last year while averaging 86.5 mph on his fastball.
Michael Wacha
Michael Wacha Tallies third win
Mon, May 12, 2025, 10:28 PM
Wacha (3-4) earned the win Monday at Houston, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out three.
Analysis: The veteran right-hander limited damage in this 88-pitch performance, scattering six singles and two doubles while generating only six whiffs. Wacha collected his fourth consecutive quality start, as he's pitched to a 1.75 ERA, 1.09 WHIP across 25.2 innings during that span. Through 51.2 total frames, the 33-year-old sports a 2.96 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 37:16 K:BB. He is currently slated to make his next start against one of his former teams, the Cardinals, at home this weekend.
Michael Massey
Michael Massey Pops second homer
Mon, May 12, 2025, 10:19 PM
Massey went 1-for-4 with a solo homer, a walk and an additional run scored in Monday's 7-5 win against the Astros.
Analysis: The Kansas City second baseman took Houston starter Ryan Gusto deep in the second inning to open the game's scoring. Massey has finally shown signs of life over his last 10 games, batting .275 (11-for-40) with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored. Across 146 total plate appearances, the 27-year-old is slashing .213/.234/.294 with 13 RBI and 8 runs scored.
Carlos Estevez
Carlos Estevez Collects 12th save
Mon, May 12, 2025, 10:10 PM
Estevez secured the save in Monday's 7-5 victory over Houston, allowing one hit and no walks over a scoreless inning with one strikeout.
Analysis: After conceding a leadoff single to Jose Altuve in the ninth, Estevez cleanly retired the next three batters to bag his 94th career save. The 32-year-old has converted his last seven save opportunities, cementing him as the Kansas City closer. Overall, Estevez has pitched to a 2.37 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB across 19 innings.
Noah Murdock
Noah Murdock Returned to Kansas City
Mon, May 12, 2025, 9:46 PM
Murdock was returned from the Athletics to the Royals on Monday, per MLB's transaction log.
Analysis: Murdock was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Friday, and as a Rule 5 draft pick, he'll return to the Royals' farm system after going unclaimed on waivers. He's been roughed up so far this season in the big leagues, accruing a 13.24 ERA and 2.71 WHIP with a 21:20 K:BB across 17.0 innings.
Freddy Fermin
Freddy Fermin Could lose catching opportunities
Mon, May 12, 2025, 5:39 PM
Fermin is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros.
Analysis: Before sitting out Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Red Sox while Luke Maile received the nod behind the dish, Fermin had made three straight starts at catcher. Fermin will remain on the bench again Monday, and his brief run as the Royals' No. 1 backstop could be over. Salvador Perez had been limited to playing designated hitter or first base since returning to the lineup May 4 following a two-game absence due to a hip injury, but he'll resume catching Monday. If Perez checks out fine Monday, he could see his catching workload pick up in the games to come.
Seth Lugo
Seth Lugo Logs quality start in loss
Sun, May 11, 2025, 9:02 PM
Lugo (3-4) took the loss against the Red Sox on Sunday, allowing three runs on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts over six innings.
Analysis: Lugo was burned by a solo home run in the fourth inning and a two-run shot in the sixth. The 35-year-old still notched his fifth consecutive quality start, though he's now surrendered nine long balls in nine outings. On the season, he owns a 3.02 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 42:15 K:BB across 56.2 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Cardinals next weekend.
Freddy Fermin
Freddy Fermin Resting Sunday
Sun, May 11, 2025, 12:23 PM
Fermin is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.
Analysis: Fermin will get a breather after he started each of the Royals' last three contests. Luke Maile will check in for Fermin behind the dish.
Cole Ragans
Cole Ragans Punches out eight in loss
Sat, May 10, 2025, 9:35 PM
Ragans (2-2) took the loss against the Red Sox on Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight over five innings.
Analysis: Ragans gave up one run through the first four innings, but he was tagged for three more in the fifth on three consecutive RBI singles. He generated 14 whiffs on 95 pitches (65 strikes), and while he's recorded at least eight strikeouts in six of eight starts this season, he has also yielded at least four earned runs in three of his last four outings. Ragans has a 4.20 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 40.2 innings, and his 65 strikeouts is tied with Garrett Crochet for second most in the American League behind Carlos Rodon (67). Ragans is lined up to face the Cardinals at home next weekend.
Michael Lorenzen
Michael Lorenzen Takes no-decision Friday
Sat, May 10, 2025, 8:37 AM
Lorenzen didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Red Sox after pitching seven shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out seven batters. He did not issue a walk.
Analysis: Getting through seven scoreless frames on just 90 pitches feels like too good of a performance not to be rewarded with a win, but that's what happens when your offense doesn't put any runs on the board until the 11th inning. The 33-year-old entered the game with a 4.23 ERA and 1.41 WHIP, but those numbers have dropped to 3.57 and 1.26, respectively, following his longest outing of the season. He'll look to keep his momentum going and collect his first win of May next week in Houston.
Kyle Wright
Kyle Wright Pulled off rehab assignment
Fri, May 9, 2025, 3:01 PM
Wright has been pulled off his rehab assignment due to right shoulder fatigue.
Analysis: It's not altogether surprising given that Wright is coming back from major shoulder surgery, but it's a less-than-desirable development. The expectation is for Wright to be skipped for 1-to-2 starts before resuming his rehab assignment, but that will depend on how he recovers. Wright has made two rehab starts with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, allowing six runs (five earned) with a 5:3 K:BB over six innings.
Drew Waters
Drew Waters Grabbing seat Friday
Fri, May 9, 2025, 2:26 PM
Waters is absent from the lineup for Friday's game against the Red Sox.
Analysis: Waters had started each of the previous five games and all but one contest since April 16, but he will begin Friday's series opener on the bench. The Royals will go with Jonathan India, Kyle Isbel and Mark Canha in the outfield.
Trevor Richards
Trevor Richards Grabs minors deal from Royals
Fri, May 9, 2025, 8:11 AM
The Royals signed Richards to a minor-league contract Thursday.
Analysis: Richards had been cut loose by the Cubs earlier this week after posting a 7.27 ERA and 12:7 K:BB over 8.2 innings at Triple-A Iowa. The righty will report to Triple-A Omaha, where he will give the Royals some relief depth.
Bobby Witt Jr.
Bobby Witt Jr. Four hits, two steals Thursday
Thu, May 8, 2025, 5:48 PM
Witt went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases in Thursday's 10-0 win over the White Sox.
Analysis: It was another standout effort from Witt, who's gone 10-for-22 (.455) with six extra-base hits and four steals in his last five contests. The star shortstop is now slashing .325/.392/.530 with five homers, 23 RBI, 25 runs scored and 13 steals across 171 plate appearances this season.
